My family had the privilege of sponsoring the education of two siblings, dating back to 2010. We were eager to meet them on our next trip to Bengaluru, India in 2011. It was a transformational experience to witness the good work of James Ambat and his dedicated team at Building Blocks schools. As a kindergarten teacher, I was in awe of their curriculum: teaching hygiene, English, phonics based reading, writing, math and music to migrant students that spoke a dozen different languages at home. James had brought the schools to the slums, and everyone was thriving. Over the years, my daughter, Megha, and I advocated to empower the youth at Building Blocks by adding libraries, continuing education for teachers and after school homework help programs.
Covid-19 hurdled some challenges, but also offered us opportunities to re-invent ourselves. Thus grew our e-Academy's tutoring program through an organic idea and spread through a grass roots movement. Our goal is to mitigate educational and gender inequities, while bridging a digital divide. We are embarking on our fifth academic year of free virtual tutorials. We're grateful to our village of global volunteers that carry on our dream. Gandhi said, "Poverty is the worst form of violence. Be the change you wish to see in the world". Educate to Empower e-Academy strives to break the cycle of poverty through the gift of education, thus creating a new literate generation.
